When it comes to measurement technology, most people assume newer, electronic equipment is better, but that is not always the case, although it may very well be sometimes. This analytical balance scale is excellent for a reloading scale, though the instructions could be clearer. If you’re measuring very small increments and need consistent results, it’s essential to use a draft shield around the unit—covering at least three sides. Additionally, allow the scale to warm up and stabilize for about half an hour before taking any critical measurements.
Once you get past the short learning curve, the scale is very user-friendly. I particularly appreciate that objects don’t need to be perfectly centered on the platform to get accurate readings. Overall, this is an excellent tool for precision measurements.
For the money, this Ohaus SPX123 Scout Portable Scale is the most accurate powder scale for reloading you will find. The 0.001g accuracy is far smaller than you will ever be able to notice given the other variables with a cartridge and rifle. But, if ultimate accuracy is your goal, this is the most accurate digital scale for reloading.
2. Reloading Powder Scale Buying Guide
2.1 Digital Reloading Scale or Balance Beam Reloading Scale
The best would be to have both, because scales have two uses. There are two kinds of reloading scales, balance-beam scales and digital scales such as the Frankford scale. Each suited to different uses. I have two and use both of them.
A scale can be used to determine the mass or weight of something, like how much does a quarter, a particular bullet or a gem weigh. An electronic reloading scale is excellent and gives accurate weights within seconds. Pick the thing up and put it back to confirm. They are accurate, consistent, and easy to use. Electronic scales do also have some drawbacks, especially some that struggle with magnetic drift or zero drift from various factors, they can drive you nuts, so make sure the scale you get, that your reloading room and environment is set up correctly for it.
Mechanical reloading powder scales takes more time because, rather than telling what something weighs it tells whether your guess is high or low, then you adjust your guess accordingly, put it on again and wait for the scale to settle and repeat until the scale confirms you have finally guessed right. Something taking minutes with a balance beam scale takes only a few seconds with a digital scale.
Scales can also used to accumulate the desired amount of something like the exact amount of gunpowder or propellant to the milligram. So say for instance that I want 40.6 grains of powder; with a balance beam scale I add until the scale moves, then trickle more in slowly until the scale indicates it holds the desired amount. This may take a minute or so, but a good balance beam scale responds immediately to each bit of material added and so precise measurements are easy to obtain and stop at due to the speed and method used.
Lower priced digital reloading scales don’t respond to small changes as quickly until they suddenly report that you have possibly added too much. A relatively inexpensive electronic reloading scale will report that I have added 40.4 grains of powder, then I add a bit more, no change, a bit more, no change, a bit more, then the scale suddenly reports I have 40.7 grains, too much. If you have to do this a few times to get the exact accurate desired amount, then it may sometimes take longer than with a a mechanical or balance beam reloading scale. This problem is only with the less expensive electronic reloading scales.
For most this precision is unnecessary so a digital scale works great, if absolute precision is your goal, get both types of scale, and if you reload a lot, and you value your time and effort, a electronic powder dispenser is without a doubt one of the biggest and best upgrades you can do for your reloading kit.
If you are along range or benchrest shooter though, micro measurement matters, so when you want to remove as many variables from the process and consistency chains as possible, investing in a very accurate electronic scale is a no-brainer. Magnetic force restoration scales like the A&D FZ-120i simply have a faster response and less zero drift compared to the ultra-fine measuring TRX-925 scale which is a strain gauge balance scale.
Yes the TRX-925 is measures to a lower decimal, but it can be argued that this finer rate does not make a difference as proved by the Houston warehouse project, where neck tension was shown to be more influential than exact powder charge. I would rather focus on a scale that isn’t as sensitive to wind, environmental factors and tend to drift, so that is why the A&D FZ-120i is my recommendation.
2.2 Importance of Decimal Accuracy
Many companies or bar-stool reloaders like to brag about the 0.00001 grain accuracy of their expensive reloading scales. Let us use a quickly calculate how much of an affect the 1/ 10th of a grain variance makes to a cartridge when shot, as most of the inexpensive reloading scales only go to 0.1grain accuracy.
If the load data for one cartridge is 25.0 grains to achieve 3,200 FPS muzzle velocity, this will mean 25.0 grains = 3,200 FPS. This means that each one (1) grain should theoretically be responsible for 128 FPS velocity and a variation in a tenth of a grain should be 12.8 FPS variation. Very seldom will even experienced reloaders focused in precision rifle shooting achieve an extreme spread (ES) of 12.8 fps in a string of shots. So if you feel you need to pay more than what the 0.1 grain accuracy entry level scales like the small Frankford Arsenal DS-750 above offers, just make sure the rest of your precision reloading process has smaller deviations or variation than that, otherwise you will be wasting your money.
Let’s say you are one of the consistent advanced reloaders that consistently get lower ES than 10-12fps on shot strings, let’s take the calculation as step further and see if your 0.01gr accuracy is needed or even worth it (0.01gr = 0.0007g = one corporal):
Charge weight variations are tiny at this level. A difference of one “corporal” (half a kernel) of Varget powder in a typical rifle cartridge only translates to roughly 1 fps difference in bullet speed. No commonly available chronograph or Doppler radar can even measure such a small change in velocity.
Weighing to 0.01 grains isn’t a magic bullet for accuracy. If you’re already accurate to 0.1 grains, going ten times finer won’t drastically improve your Extreme Spread (ES) or Standard Deviation (SD). I’ve confirmed this using a high-precision lab balance, and even purposely using a less precise method yields similar ES/SD values.
So why do I still weigh to such a tight tolerance? Because I can, and it eliminates one potential source of error. By taking this “overkill” step, I have complete confidence in my powder charges when competing.
Feel free to aim for 0.01 grain precision! It might not be a huge performance gain, but if it works for you and doesn’t take much extra time, then go for it!
2.2 Difference between a balance and a scale
The terms “balance” and “scale” are often used interchangeably, but they refer to different types of instruments with distinct principles of operation and use cases, and technically all the reloading scales usually spoken of, are actually reloading balances:
Balance:

Read the amazon reviews on the frankford platinum, not good. The AWS 100 is the best scale for trickling powder and is very consistent and does not drift.
A portable pocket scale like that will never be nearly as accurate as a true electronic lab scale. Or lab balance as they are actually called. The A&D FZ-120i mentioned here is the best you will get anywhere near that price point, the FX model is just as good, just with fewer useful features.
I love my old beam scale, but what people don’t know about them, is that a beam scale also needs to be professionally tuned and verified before it is as accurate as it is supposed to be. Yes, they don’t drift, but not even being on exact zero before starting, means you won’t ever have the exact weight of the charge either. Especially with most chinese made beam scales made today.
