We Talk with Todd

What shooting disciplines do you practice or compete in?

PRS, NRL, PRS22, NRL22, Bullseye 22, IDPA, USPSA, Sporting Clays and random outlaw matches of different types.

How did you get started in reloading your own ammunition?

I started reloading in 1998-99 for my 7mm Rem Mag to get the most accuracy I could at some distance.  This was my first taste of longer range shooting.  300+ yards LOL

What is your main goal with reloading?

To achieve the most accuracy and consistency out of my rifles.

What sequence do you follow when reloading virgin brass?

No brass prep at all.  I load my Lapua BR brass with a mild charge (because I am fire-forming to BRA).  Then I either go practice or shoot a local match with that ammo.

What sequence do you follow when reloading fired brass?

Anneal, spray with case lube, full length resize, tumble in corn cob, prime, powder, bullet.

mdt ckye pod triple

Do you anneal your brass and why?

Yes. I want to keep all my brass as consistent as possible.  Regardless of how many firings it has.  It also extends the life of the brass.

What caliber do you shoot with and why?

Mainly 6BRA.  It is easy to find a very accurate load.  It is a highly efficient load.  And, the brass lasts a long time.

What does your reloading equipment consist of?

  • EZ-Anneal Annealer
  • Hornady Progressive Press
  • RCBS Summit press
  • 3-Match Master powder dispensers
  • 1-Charge Master powder dispenser
  • Cabelas tumbler
  • Giraud Trimmer

What load development method do you use to find a new load?

I shoot different charge weights over my Magnetospeed chronograph looking for a velocity node.  Load up test rounds in the middle of that node.  Check 100 yard groups, SDs and ESs.  Take to 1000 yards to verify consistency at distance.  I load all my rounds 0.070 of the lands for all tests.  I only adjust the bullet jump if I cannot get it to shoot 0.070 off.  Typically this is not an issue.

Do you do load development before, during or after barrel break in?

After

At what MOA or Grouping size do you stop load development?

Sub1/2 MOA I am done.

What components does your rifle and optics that you currently use, consist of?

  • Zermatt TL3
  • Proof Research Comp. Con. Barrel
  • Triggertech Diamond
  • MDT ACC Chassis
  • MDT one piece scope mount
  • MDT Ckye-Pod Gen 2 Double Pull
  • Vortex Gen2 4.5-27
  • Little Bastard Gen 3 Brake
6bra prs rifle

How often do you clean your rifle and barrel?

I wipe out the action at the end of every day of competition.   Barrel gets cleaned before 500 rounds.

What barrel cleaning equipment, products and procedure do you use?

Boretech Proof Positive jag, one piece Dewey cleaning rod, Boretech Eliminator, and nylon brush. 2 wet patches, 10 strokes with wet brush, 1 wet patch, patch dry.

What do you feel is your biggest factor resulting in your consistency?

Having a set routine in everything I do from how I clean the rifle, to how I approach a stage.
